As you may have guessed, there being no royalty in the USA, “The Duchess” is not American. As a legal alien, and an extensively traveled one at that, she has perhaps a slightly different perspective on both American and international affairs than someone born and bred in this great country. (She also has no inherent need to pick a side.)

Like many people around the world, we watched the unfolding drama of election night with somewhat mixed feelings. The graciousness of John McCain’s concession speech filled us with regret that his whole campaign hadn’t been conducted in the same spirit of generosity and respect, while the jubilation of Obama supporters caused us to marvel at a naiveté which seemed to believe the challenge is over, when, in fact, it is just beginning. Nevertheless, it was an historic and dignified occasion, and the country should be proud!

Amidst all the powerful images and heartfelt opinions on both sides, one thought stayed with me from that night and it was this: in politics, there is no final victory nor final defeat. Time never stands still and all earthly things are cyclical. The political game continues, and those who now feel like “losers” have at other times been “winners” and will be again. The game continues, and every individual has to decide for him or herself whether to opt out or stay in for the next round.

The same could be said of the “game” of real estate. Looking back over the last century, there have been plenty of ups and downs, losses and gains, “losers” and “winners,” and still the game goes on. Those who say opportunity in real estate is at an end simply don’t know their history. The same was said in 1947 (Time Magazine), 1969 (Business Week), 1986 (Money Magazine), 1993 (L.A. Times) and numerous other times. Now as then, the statement is only true for those who adopt it as truth and then manifest that “truth” in their own lives.

So, the game is only over for YOU, if you decide not to play anymore. But why would you do that? Remember, the worse things appear now, the greater the potential for improvement! Whether you feel you won or lost this time around, the next cycle is already on its way . . .
